The one good thing about being small was that people underestimated you. Nobody expected short stuff to be a good quidditch player or to have a mean left hook. Another good thing about being small was that she could act below her age and get away with it. She always ate of the kids menu at home and her parents got her into science museums for less. The last good thing about being small was that when you wanted to hide from everyone, it was really easy to fit yourself into the most cramped corner you could find. In Vi's case it was on a windowsill of the common room, one that had nice thick drapery that usually remained closed because one of the many bookshelves had been wedged in front of it. There was only about a foot of wiggle room between the end of the bookcase and the window, and she fit easily enough, ducking behind the curtain to curl up as far behind the shelving as possible. Her shoulder pressed against freezing glass but she could barely feel it through her oversized Ravenclaw quidditch sweater which wore more like a dress than a sweater (one of the disadvantages of being small was they never had your proper size available). She lifted her knees up to her chest and turned herself into the tightest ball possible.

Don't cry. She pleaded to herself, squeezing her eyes tight and pressing her face against her knees. Don't you fucking let her get to you, Violet, do you hear me? Don't cry. She reasoned with herself again as hot tears escaped from tightly squinted lids. She trembled with the effort. Don't, she begged but the tears came spilling and she sobbed quietly, comforted only by the fact that she was nearly impossible to find, what with the bookshelf and curtain blocking her from view. There was nowhere safe for her. If she went up to her room, the horrible prissy bitches were probably up there. If she went to the bathroom she had the same risk. If she went to the room of requirement, she risked the band walking in and finding her. Nowhere was safe. There wasn't even quidditch to keep her mind of things. She wanted to go home and never come back. Muggle high school had to be better than this. Anything had to be better than this.

When Lenny had approached him about joining a band, JC had agreed almost for a laugh. What musically inclined teen hadn't joined some band or singing group at some point? Now the band was actually coming together and finding their own unique sound - and they were actually sounding quite good. JC was actually considering pursuing music after school if playing professional quidditch didn't pan out. Still, that was months or years in the future and he was not the type to wish his life away.

When band practice was over, he headed back to the dorms to enjoy a little rest and relaxation while he could. The quidditch season would be continuing soon and he'd be back to having more on his plate than he could handle. The common room was surprisingly empty and eerily quiet, save for the sound of... someone crying? He followed the sound to a bookcase pressed against a window. While the athlete could have easily moved the shelves to see who was hiding, he didn't dare; they were clearly hiding for a reason. Instead JC crouched down and said, "Hey, I'll leave you alone if you want, but if you need someone to talk to... I'm someone."

The nimble girl was so caught up in trying to reign in her emotions that she hardly cared that someone else had entered the common room. Unless the person was Bill, she didn't care, and they probably didn't either. She was sure whoever the individual was would just pass her on when she heard a voice just on the other side of the shelving unit. It was a little muffled, but she would know it anywhere. She puled herself tighter into a ball as if that would make her actually disappear or him go away, and while the boy had offered to do so, she couldn't bring herself to tell him to. In fact, she couldn't bring herself to any reasonable response or to keep the usual tone of respect with him. Not today. Not this time.

"Oh, what do you care?" She snapped, even though she could already feel herself regretting it. There was no going back. "Unless a girl's trying to get in your pants or you're trying to get into hers, we're a waste of your precious time." 'We' was a bit of a stretch. She was quite convinced of just her. Still, snapping at him made her braver and it felt really, quite good. His charm wouldn't work on her. It didn't before and it wouldn't now. The tears were still running, but now she had someone to turn her frustrations on so she wiped her cheeks on the sleeve of the oversized sweater and glanced out the window towards the grounds below, awaiting his brilliant comeback.

His brows furrowed as he listened to the girl speak, and after a few seconds realized who the voice belonged to. JC & Vi weren't particularly close - they had some friends in common, and they played on the quidditch team together, but had very little interaction outside of it. As far as he could tell, she wasn't interested in him that way and was wondering why she suddenly seemed offended that he didn't. He switched positions, so he was sitting Indian style on the floor next to the shelves, settling in for as long as necessary. ”That’s not…” The rest of the sentence was going to be entirely true, but he realized such a distinction was not likely to be helpful here. A frustrated sigh escaped him as he realized he had no idea what to say. ”Is that… is that why you're upset?”

Well, at least he had the decency to stop himself from denying it. For a moment, Vi actually thought the Captain would take the blow and just leave her alone, but through the shelving she could hear the muffled sound of someone settling beside the unit. She sniffed and wiped at her eyes, which rolled at his question. "No." Vi snapped back at him, not feeling the need to protest the idea further. The disgust was clear in the word that had dropped from her mouth. "You could be less of a wanker, though," she couldn't stop herself from adding. She knew it wasn't really his fault, but she was angry, and he was there, and that made him a target. "For a captain, you don't seem to give a shit about some of your teammates and I mean hello- you wouldn't be so great if we didn't back you," she informed him bitterly, followed by a muttered "egotistic asshole." to be fair, the game didn't end until she caught the snitch. It could go on for days, weeks, even, if she didn't. Not that she wanted the fame or needed that much recognition, but a simple acknowledgement of her existence from him would be nice.

JC liked to think he treated those of the opposite gender rather well. He was always upfront with them, even when he'd been sleeping around, and made a point to take their feelings into consideration. However, the quidditch captain hadn't considered the effect he had on other girls, the one's he hadn't taken an interest in. Truth be told, there weren't many that fell under that category and at least in Vi's case it was more a matter of her never showing an interest. Suddenly her message became clear as he realized even now he was only thinking about the way he'd treated girls he'd had some form of intimate connection with, not the gender as a whole. Things were different now, he had a steady girlfriend, though he doubted that mattered. Vi was hurt, and even if he weren't the reason she was in pain at that moment, he certainly hadn't been treating her well. He took a deep inhale through his nose before saying, "You're right, I'm sorry." JC whipped around when he heard the entrance to the common room open and smiled at the third year that came in who in return gave him a very quizzical look before scampering off to the dorms. "Listen, I don't want to leave you alone while you're upset, but would you mind taking this somewhere a bit more private? Somewhere you can cry or scream or yell or, I don't know, hit something - hit me if it would make you feel better?"

Vi rolled her eyes, swallowing the bitter taste the sound of his apology created. Well, it wasn't as fun to yell at him with him being all apologetic about it. She jumped slightly at the sound of someone else entering the dorms, her breathing growing as silent as possible. He didn't dare give her away, did he? Thankfully, whoever it was seemed to have left and the Captain sensed the urgency of keeping this conversation- if that was what it was- private. She gave a disgruntled sigh at his offering and leaned her head back against the cold glass. He was really making this whole staying mad at him thing difficult, and as much as she might like to punch someone right now, that someone was not him. She wiped her face on the sleeve of her jumper, her eyes puffy but at least she never wore makeup so there was no risk for coming out looking like a raccoon, but she was hesitant. If she emerged, she would be exposed, no longer protected by the wall of the bookshelf that separated them. She sniffed, mulling over her options before finally resolving to stand, shifting the curtain and reaching up, her fingers hooking over the top of the shelving unit before she hoisted herself on top of it. She sat, feet dangling as she stared down at him. "I don't want to hit you," she told him matter-of-factly, "and if I needed to hit someone so badly, you're not the Flint I'd take it out on. Even if you are still an ass."

There was a rustling sound behind the bookcase and JC wasn't sure if Vi was preparing to come out or just settling in further. Either way, he stayed put in his position on the floor until she made an appearance or declared she wouldn't. After a few seconds the curtain shifted and the first thing he noticed were her nails as she climbed out of her hiding place. He gave her a half smile when she emerged, he was happy to see her but felt bad about how he was seeing her. A chuckle escaped him at her words, "Yes, from what I understand Ethan makes a pretty decent punching bag." Using one hand to push himself off the floor, JC got to his feet and held a hand out to her to help her get down. He knew she didn't need it and likely wouldn't accept his help, but he didn't want to be a jerk by not offering. "Have you ever set up the Room of Requirement before?" That did seem to be the best option for them if they wanted privacy, not to mention she could ask it for whatever she needed in the moment.

Vi offered a half-hearted smirk but didn't chuckle along with him, her eyes watching cautiously as he stood. She eyed his hand for a moment, her brows arching, wondering if he really thought she needed it or if this was him continuing to try to be annoyingly nice. She snorted again and just dropped down, landing easily on her feet with a slight bend of her knees before righting and glancing up at him. "Okay, I know we haven't hung out but what do I look like, a first year?" Well, she was quite small, but that was besides the point. She rolled her eyes again and shook her head at him before heading out, a bit begrudgingly but it was better than waiting around in the common room for those horrible girls to return. The problem was, the room of requirement knew her all too well as of late. She had gone their frequently, ever since the band started, ever since Ruby started having her breakdowns about what's-his-face and the other one. They had a deal, the two of them. They didn't ask questions when they were in the room together. As exposed as she would feel showing him this, that was the mentality she could have going into it. Assume he wouldn't ask too many questions. After all, she had been pretty much invisible up to this point. So why would he really care enough to probe? More importantly, why would he care enough to spill her secrets?

When they reached the room and the door formed, the girl had momentary second thoughts. Any and all confidence she showed tended to be a front, and while she had had the entire journey through the castle in silence to reconsider, it really only hit her when the room had opened, waiting for her. "You really don't have to stay," she finally muttered before pushing open the doors, revealing the familiar set up in which all but one of the walls were covered in dark, swirling murals, leaving only one small stretch of dingy mirrors. In the corner was a record player, and the records Vi had left behind. She'd been lucky enough to get a converter for Christmas, one which took her digital music files and transferred them onto records she could bring with her into the wizarding world. There was an unclear division between where Ruby's area started and Vi's ended, but Violet didn't need much and she didn't care how much art clutter Ruby filled the space was, she really only needed one stretch of flooring for what she needed the room for. "Seriously, I'm fine," she said, and pulled off her jumper to reveal the simple tank underneath, also taking her wand out of the pocket while she was at it and using it to flip on the music and getting out the built up anger the only way she knew how when quidditch wasn't in season.
